Secretly straight and squirming twosome

MANILA, Philippines — Like many of the other Adam Sandler comedies, “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” can be painfully juvenile. But as with most titles in his filmography, it can also be a time-killing guilty pleasure. Directed by frequent collaborator Dennis Dugan, the movie cashes in on contemporary gay issues, while utilizing obligatory loads of slapstick and crass punchlines. So yes, it’s more of the same, but we get Sandler and his usual gaggle of comedians playing characters that, this time, react to some touchy lifestyle topics.

Sandler’s done pretty much the same confused jerk role before, so his Chuck, a New York fireman and bimbo-magnet, isn’t anything different. He’s quite homophobic, too. But he proves that he’s willing to be open-minded when a longtime work buddy, the widower Larry (Kevin James from “King of Queens”), convinces him to fake a gay union to fix an insurance claim oversight. Larry persuades Chuck to be his pseudo-domestic partner for the benefit of his kids. The lothario nervously, but generously, signs all pertinent documents.

Grammar wars, gay heroes and an encyclopedia of Geekdom

Move over Wikipedia. The bible of the online world has launched Geekipedia.

The problem with the former, proclaims the intro to the latter, is its failure to “distinguish between `need to know’ and `didja know?’ – and it’s lousy for browsing.”

To rectify that situation, the magazine has compiled 149 entries for “people, places, things and trends to help you navigate the wired world.” Among them:

Abrams, J.J.: the horn-rimmed creator of TV’s Lost and “the biggest geek in network television;”

Lolcats: a basic rule of Web comedy: “funny pictures of cats are even funnier with all-uppercase pidgin English captions;”
